Description
Canada is framed by three coasts on the west, north and east. Each one is vastly different from the others, but together, they form one of the world’s longest coastlines that is distinctly Canadian. This exquisite 2020 $200 pure gold coin showcases iconic elements that make the Atlantic coast unique—a humpback whale, northern gannet and sea stack. Waves, wind and the world’s highest tides shape the coast by smoothing rock and cutting deep crevasses. In the same way, this proof coin features meticulous polishes and engraving to bring you an original woodcut design with ultra-crisp lines. Mintage limited to 400 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
Canadian artist Cathy Boursey-Sabourin has created an original woodcut design of a humpback whale and northern gannet. The whale is diving after having surfaced for air, while the northern gannet is plunging into the water for fish. One of the coast’s most distinctive rock formations towers in the background, carved by wind and the world’s highest tides. The whale’s nose and the bird’s beak are pointing downward towards the left side of the coin, like waves that roll in from the Atlantic and crash onto Canada’s eastern shores.
