Description

It was over 150 years ago that a newly minted country issued its first coins. To mark this anniversary, Leonard C. Wyon’s historic maple bough design has been brought back to life on a limited $10 commemorative piece that proudly pays tribute to Canada’s first national coinage. Mintage is extremely limited to 1,000. GST/HST exempt.

Leonard C. Wyon’s portrait of Queen Victoria was inspired by the “Young Head” effigy (1838-1895) designed by his father, William Wyon (1795-1851), former Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint.

The Design:

Double dated (“1870 – 2020”) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s first national coinage, the reverse is a reproduction of Leonard C. Wyon’s crossed maple boughs design surmounted by St. Edward’s Crown, as seen on the four denominations (5, 10, 25 and 50 cents) of coins issued by the Dominion of Canada in 1870. The obverse features the “laureate” effigy of Queen Victoria by Leonard C. Wyon, as it appeared on the historic 5- and 10-cent coins.
