Description
Straight from the Royal Canadian Mint's R&D lab comes a prototype of innovative technology that brings storytelling to a new level. R&D researchers have unlocked more design space than ever before by extending the engraving inside the coin. It’s a world first, and it’s about treating the art as distinctly separate layers. Nothing is lost in the background because each design element, from backdrop to focal point, is engraved on its own dedicated layer. Through this multidimensional approach, they are able to go deeper into detail and add to the story being told on our coins, beginning with this ultra-enhanced version of our $2 circulation coin. Mintage is limited to 279. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The reverse design is based on the $2 circulation coin and enhanced with multilayered engraving technology. A top plate includes a cutout of an adult polar bear on an ice floe during the summer months, while its outer ring bears the words “CANADA” and “2 DOLLARS”. The inside of the coin provides a separate base layer and features the Arctic landscape. The obverse features the repeating R&D logo as a tiled background behind the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
