Description

This special issue dollar coin is designed for all Canadians as a celebration of the rights and freedoms we enjoy today, and as a reminder of the long path towards equality. The impetus for the coin is to mark the 50th anniversary of changes made to the criminal code in 1969 decriminalizing homosexuality, but can be equally applied to all forms of discrimination whether based on sexual orientation, gender or any other reason. It is a celebration of the hard-fought freedom to live, love and be.

The Design:
The reverse image has been created by a Canadian artist named Joe Average, and is meant to provide an inspirational message that re-affirms Canada’s commitment to human rights while reflecting on our journey towards equality, diversity and inclusivity. The design is intended to be open to personal interpretation. The facial traits reflect gender fluidity and the spectrum of genders; they may belong to two individuals or they may represent different aspects of one’s identity. The English word “EQUALITY” and the French word “ÉGALITÉ” are included on two curved bands. The frame includes the word “CANADA”, the double dates “1969” and “2019” and the Dollar denomination. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

This special wrapped collector roll includes 25 Equality one dollar coins in brilliant uncirculated condition.
