Description
The 2018 $10 Armistice fine silver coin commemorates the centennial of the Armistice of 1918, an
agreement for peace after the four long, mud-soaked years of the First World War (1914-1918). The
pairing of a contemplative soldier and the poppy on the reverse is an expression of a nation’s
gratitude for peace and for the contributions of our combatants, whose sacrifices we remember
every November 11th.
The reverse image by Canadian artist Laurie McGaw marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 with a poignant pairing of a soldier and the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. At the end of the First World War, the soldier is war weary and contemplative; his helmet is off, he holds his rifle upright; he is grateful that he is alive but his head is bowed, as if in silent prayer for his lost mates. The reverse also includes the engraved text “FINE SILVER 9999 ARGENT PUR” and “CANADA 2018.” The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt
The 2018 $10 Armistice fine silver coin honours the 100th anniversary of the ceasefire that brought an end to the First World War.
