Description

Superman™ is one of the iconic images of the 20th century and beyond, and often seen as the greatest superhero ever created. This DC Comics “Originals” coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint is a $50 denomination featuring gold plating, and weighs just over THREE ounces of pure silver. Mintage is limited to only 3,000 coins. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is GST/HST exempt.

The Design:
Through a layered approach, the reverse design re-visits the artistry of retro DC Comics. In the background, laser engraving re-creates all the details, shadows, nuances and complexities that are characteristic to Bronze Age comics. Each of the re-created panels hint at the origin stories of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, and are resplendent in reverse gold plating that adds a golden gleam throughout the reverse—save for the centre image of Superman. Engraved in outstanding detail, Superman shines bright in silver as the Super Hero bursts through the page, revealing a laser halftone pattern behind it. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Comics grow up – The Coming of Age DC Comics flourishes during the Bronze Age.
Moving away from the more light-hearted plots of the Silver Age, the comic books of this era pushed new boundaries through socially relevant themes, while introducing changes to the characters and their origin stories. This reverse gold-plated, fine silver coin channels the spirit of Bronze Age comics, with a special focus on Superman.

Superman:
Since his first appearance in 1938, millions of readers and movie-goers have been captivated by the adventures of Clark Kent and his secret identity as Superman. Safe from the destruction of his home planet Krypton, the infant space traveler was discovered near Smallville, Kansas, by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who raised him as their son. They instilled in him the strong values and beliefs that compel him to use his superhuman abilities for the greater good. As an adult living in the big city of Metropolis, Clark keeps his powers a secret thanks to his persona as a mild-mannered reporter; but as Superman, he becomes a powerful symbol of valour, strength and justice while battling some of the greatest villains of all time.
