Description
This 2017 $250 one kilo fine silver coin is a tribute to the first Canadian $5 and $10 gold coins issued from 1912-1914. With a diameter of more than 10 centimeters and a weight of more than 32 ounces of pure silver, this “super sized” version of Canada’s 1912 gold coins captures the exceptional detail of an iconic Canadian coin. Adding to its collectability, the mintage is extremely limited to only 500 pieces. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The reverse features a near-faithful reproduction of W. H. J. Blackmore’s design for Canada’s $5 and $10 gold coins introduced in 1912. The focal point is the Canadian coat of arms, as it appeared before 1921: a quartered shield composed of the provincial arms of the Dominion of Canada (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). Beautifully framed by a wreath of maple boughs, the coat of arms is resplendent in selective gold plating that mimics the original coin’s golden appearance. The plating also extends to the rim and the raised beaded circle that frames each side of the coin. The reverse features the word “CANADA” above the coat of arms, while the year “2017” and the face value “250 DOLLARS” are engraved beneath it. The obverse features the official Canada 150 privy mark beneath the gold-plated effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
