Scarce, popular, beautiful, and visually impressive in the big five ounce 65 mm format, every denomination in every year of issue since Big Coins was introduced in 2015 has sold out immediately from the mint and appreciated in value in the secondary market. While all denominations are highly collectible, the one cent denomination is especially sought after both as a denomination that is no longer issued for circulation and for its popular theme based on the 1967 Centennial commemorative.
The design originally created by renowned artist and sculptor Alex Colville presents a Rock Dove, associated with peace and spiritual values. While the original 1967 version was struck in about three grams of copper, this new 2017 version has grown to a 65 mm diameter with a weight of five ounce of pure silver. The finish on the Big Coin is the finest quality double struck proof, and the dove has been enhanced with a layer of 24 karat gold, creating a spectacular work of numismatic art. Even the obverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth is special, featuring the effigy in use in 1967 with selective gold plating on the Queen’s gown.
Mintage of this coin is limited to just 2,150. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this coin is HST/GST exempt.
