The Design:
The coin features a side-profile view of an Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), depicted here in the style of a traditional wildlife portrait. Meticulous engraving recreates the fox’s features with extraordinary precision on such a small canvas, giving it a life-like quality that beautifully captures the texture of its thick, winter pelt. Standing still in the wintry landscape, the fox’s small, rounded ears are alert as it quietly steadies its gaze on its prey beyond the image field. The coin is engraved with “Canada”, the date “2016” and the denomination “25 Cents”, and has a weight of .5 grams.
The Arctic Fox:
Living in some of the most frigid extremes, the arctic fox has adapted for cold survival. Its pelt is unmatched for warmth, sustaining it at temperatures below -50° Celsius. The arctic fox has such keen hearing that it can precisely locate the position of prey under the snow. When it finds prey, it pounces and punches through the snow. The fur is brown, grey-brown, blue-grey, or dark blue-grey in the warmer months. In the long Arctic winter, most turn pure white, although some populations show lighter blue-grey through the winter phase. The fox's thick fur covers its small rounded ears and even the pads of its feet, for optimum warmth.
