An important chapter in the province’s rich maritime history, the prolific shipbuilding industry of the 19th century thrust Nova Scotia into the international limelight with its reputation for finely built wooden ships. The Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this legacy with a stunning gold coin that commemorates the 1861 launch of the Amazon. Mintage is limited to 275 coins. HST/GST exempt.

The Design:

The reverse design by Canadian artist Neil Hamelin features a starboard view of the Nova Scotia-built brigantine known as the Amazon. The 184-ton vessel is heeled over as the wind fills her canvas sails and drives her forward through the choppy waters of the Atlantic. Beautifully intricate engraving recreates the ship in extraordinary detail, from the rigging of her headsails to the wooden planks of her hull, and even captures the anchor attached to her bow. A pennant bearing the ship’s name flies atop the mainmast, while the British ensign flown from the gaff is depicted flapping in the strong wind.

A wonderful celebration of Nova Scotia’s rich shipbuilding history through the commemoration of the 155th anniversary of the Amazon. The coin’s artistic merit and the story it tells will appeal to all ages, from young sailors to old salts. An unforgettable addition to any collection featuring Canadian or naval themes, and a powerful keepsake for those with a passion for Canada’s maritime history.
