Description
This large five ounce pure silver 2016 Loon Dollar Big Coin features selective colour which brings the familiar loon design to life in a way never seen before. This coin and all others in the series sold out within minutes of release from the RCM, with 2016 Big Coins now extremely difficult to obtain in the secondary market. With a mintage of just 1,500 coins for one of Canada’s premier quality annual proof coins, this is an extremely limited issue with demand significantly greater than the quantity produced. As a pure silver coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, there is no HST or GST applicable on this item.
The Design:
The reverse image by Canadian artist Robert Carmichael features the profile portrait of a common loon floating on a still lake with a small island populated by conifers in the left-side background. The loon, waterway, and tree-lined island are selectively coloured. The reverse is also engraved with the text “CANADA” and “DOLLAR” and the date “2016”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
While a regular loon dollar has a diameter of 26.5 mm and a weight of just 7 grams in base metal, this huge Dollar has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or 5 ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 22 regular loon coins. The coin is double struck to ensure fine detail and a near flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective colour.
