Description

The World War I Heroes of Niue 1 oz Silver Coin honors a poignant, lesser-known chapter of the Great War. This beautifully crafted piece honors the 149 Niuean volunteers who left their tiny South Pacific home in October 1915 to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Representing a massive portion of the island's 4,000-person population, many of these men tragically lost their lives to harsh European winters and a lack of immunity to foreign diseases. Mintage is 1,915. HST/GST exempt.

The Design
The reverse design depicts a man in traditional island dress kneeling in sorrow. He holds a Lee-Enfield short-magazine rifle driven into the ground, upon which a British "Tommy" helmet rests—a traditional battlefield grave marker that serves as a poignant reminder of how deeply the Great War affected even the most remote corners of the world. Red coloured poppies grow at the base of the rifle.
