Description

This 2014 $300 piece is the spectacular conclusion to the Royal Canadian Mint’s 14kt gold coin series, which faithfully reproduces the Coat of Arms of Canada’s ten provinces and three territories on 14 coins. This coin is crafted in almost 2 ounces of 14kt yellow gold, with an impressive diameter of 50mm. Mintage is limited to 500 coins.

The Design:

It boasts a depiction of the Canadian Coat of Arms, seen here in phenomenal detail; the individual elements tell the story of Canada’s creation. Proclaimed in 1921 by King George V as a representation of Canada, it features emblems representative of France (three Fleur-de-lis), England (three lions), Scotland (one lion within a “double tressure”) and Ireland (the Harp of Tara). In 1994, the Coat of Arms was modified so that the Latin motto Desiderantes Meliorem Patrium (“they desire for a better country”) could be added. The base of the Coat of arms shows a scrollwork of floral emblems, which allude to the four ancient kingdoms represented in the shield: the English rose, the Scottish thistle, the Irish shamrock, and the French lily. In 1959, the crest was modified to include Canada’s motto, “from sea to sea.” This stately, generous coin is a sophisticated token that exemplifies the history of Canada’s roots; it would make a notable addition to any collection of Canadian coins.
