Description
This 2014 fine silver double struck proof $3 coin features a surprisingly lifelike image of a spider and its web which seem to sit on the surface of the coin. The orb-weaver spider is presented as one of the great Animal Architects living in Canada. Mintage is limited to just 10,000 coins. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
Your coin was designed by Canadian artist Yves Bérubé and features a painted specimen of an orb-weaving spider sub-species bearing light and dark markings on its back, body, and eight legs. The spider is viewed from the top, poised atop an embossed orb web rendered in fine detail. The image is lent dimensional detail through expert engraving. The spider occupies the upper left quadrant of the web, moving toward the central hub where it will sit in wait for its unsuspecting insect prey. The reverse also includes the word “Canada”, the denomination, and the date.
Orb Weaver Spider:
They can create 8 different types of silks, each having its own properties. They can produce multiple threads at once, weaving them with its spinnerets (small organs on the underside of a spider’s abdomen). The tensile strength of the spider’s silk can be compared to that of Kevlar and steel. Although scientists have performed experiments to extract silk for the purpose of weaving textiles, they have yet to be successful in replicating this powerful material.
