Description
The declaration of the Second World War in 1939 saw the dawning of what would prove to be a dark and devastating time in world history. An estimated 50 to 70 million people died over the duration of this conflict, almost half of which were military deaths. Today, the sacrifice and suffering of these lost soldiers is remembered year after year; now at the 75th year since its onset, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a coin in heartfelt tribute to the Canadians who bravely contributed to their country’s war effort. This coin, crafted in two full ounces of 99.99% pure gold, and featuring an impressive 42mm diameter, is limited to only 200 coins world-wide. HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
The image on this coin by Silvia Pecota depicts what is likely a training session with a Vickers Heavy Machine Gun. This weapon was heavily used by Canadians during the intense battle of Ortana in Italy in 1943, when the Canadian Army fiercely fought against German paratroopers.
