The Design:
The coin depicts an image of a bison with an abstract figure lying on the bison’s back in a position of comfort and security. The eagle feather in the figure’s hand is an important ceremonial object, often given as a sign of respect. The background pattern shows sage leaves which reinforce the buffalo’s teachings. On the back of the coin the effigy is gold plated. The words “Elizabeth II” and “Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur” are around the rim of the coin. On the left is the date “2014”, and on the right is “9999”.
Many First Nations People across Canada see the bison as a symbol for a full and happy life. The bison’s lesson is respect for the environment and all living things. The bison embodies one of the most significant examples how humanity’s survival is dependent upon nature, and invites everyone to find comfort on its back and to thrive.
