Description
This low mintage special edition 2014 proof silver dollar depicts three women constructing an Avro 683 Lancaster X, garbed in the work wear typical of the era around the Second World War. This conflict grew to such dire proportions that the urgent mobilization of the entire country was necessary, therefore requiring women—then relegated to the realm of domesticity—to begin working in war industries. This included the building of ships, aircraft, vehicles and weaponry, as well as in munitions plants and on farms. They could also be found driving trucks and provided logistical support for soldiers, among many other previously male-oriented roles. This unique imagery, in combination with a limited mintage of only 7,500, makes this piece an extremely high-quality collectable. The coin weighs about three quarters of an ounce of pure silver. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt.
The Design:
Your coin presents a collage symbolically portraying three female workers completing construction of an Avro 683 Lancaster X. In the center of the image, a standing womanin bandana and work wear of the Second World War era lifts a wrench toward the ceiling of the fuselage.Flanking her on her left and right are two similarly attired women. These women are seated on a box in front of the standing woman, riveting each of the fuselage walls.
Canada's economy adapted quickly to the war effort and transformed the country into an economic power. New industries were created while existing factories converted to the production of wartime materials. Thousands of airplanes, ships, vehicles, guns and ammunition would be produced by factories in Canada, which became the fourth largest supplier among the Allied countries.
