The Design:
Royal Canadian Mint engravers have reproduced his memorable image of bundled figures walking in the snowy streets by a horse-drawn delivery van. All of the other coins in this series have quickly sold out from the Mint, and most now sell in the secondary market at a premium above the original issue price.
Lawren H. Harris:
Lawren H. Harris was the key founder of the Group of Seven and a leading landscape artist. His painting “Toronto Street, Winter Morning” was completed in 1921.
Lawren Stewart Harris was born in Brantford, Ontario, on October 23, 1885. As a young man, Harris moved to Germany to study art. In 1940, after six years in New Hampshire and New Mexico, Harris settled in Vancouver, where he remained until his death in January 1970. Harris was a Companion of the Order of Canada and recipient of several honorary degrees from Canadian universities. He is widely recognized as one of the most important figures in modern Canadian art.
