In 1608 Samuel de Champlain established a fur trading post along the St. Lawrence River at a site used by the Algonquin people for fishing and bartering. Named Kebec from the Indigenous word meaning "where the river narrows," it quickly expanded into a major North American maritime hub.

In 2008, Quebec City celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding by Samuel de Champlain. To honour this milestone and the festivities' theme of "Meetings and Encounters," the Royal Canadian Mint struck a special commemorative $2 coin.
