The Sable Island Horses
Located southeast of Halifax off the coast of Nova Scotia, Sable Island is a remote sanctuary where feral horses are the sole terrestrial mammals. Around 200 of these pony-sized horses live on the island making up about 40 to 50 herds, each occupying a range of about three square kilometers. Although domesticated when first brought to the island, these horses have reverted to their natural wild behavior and social structures. Each herd is led by an older mare and guarded by a stallion.
Nova Scotia named the Sable Island horse as its official horse in 2008, and in 2011, their isolated home was officially declared the Sable Island National Park Reserve.
