Flowing north of the 60th parallel, the Nahanni River forms the heart of Nahanni National Park Reserve, named from the Dene expression for "people over there far away," Unscathed by the last Ice Age, this untamed landscape boasts awe-inspiring natural wonders: from 1,200-meter-deep canyons and Canada's largest known tufa mounds to subterranean cave systems, soothing hot springs, and Virginia Falls, which plummets nearly twice the height of Niagara. Nahanni provides a haven for grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and over 180 bird species, including rare trumpeter swans.
