Description
Few sights capture the imagination quite like a tall ship braving the elements. This pure silver holographic coin commemorates the ketch, a unique vessel that graced the St. Lawrence seaways during the early 19th century. Similar to a yawl, but with its mizzen mast positioned forward of the rudder, the ketch was one of the few vessels of its kind to navigate the St. Lawrence River in the early 19th century. While it evokes the romance of Canada's maritime past, the ketch remains a popular yachting design today. Mintage is limited to 16,000. HST/GST exempt.
The Design
The reverse depicts a historic ketch as it rounds the bend off Cape Diamond in Quebec. On deck, sailors work urgently to prepare the vessel for an approaching gale. The rolling storm clouds and flashes of lightning from the imminent squall are beautifully brought to life through a vivid partial hologram.
