The Building of the Canadian Pacific Railway

To persuade British Columbia to join Confederation in 1871, Canada committed to constructing a transcontinental railway connecting eastern and western commerce. Building the Canadian Pacific Railway was a monumental feat which required carving through mountains and bridging deep valleys. Thousands of Chinese laborers endured immense hardships to construct the railway through the Rocky Mountains, and between 1880 and 1885, many tragically lost their lives. Their dedication and sacrifice were fundamental to uniting the nation. The Canadian Pacific Railway was completed on November 7, 1885.
