Description

In 1999, the United Nations launched the International Year of Older Persons to promote intergenerational respect and address the needs of a shifting global demographic. As a founding UN member, Canada proudly supported this vision with its own initiative, "A Society for All Ages."

The Design
This unique 1999 silver dollar holds the distinction of being the first Canadian coin inspired by a commemorative stamp. Designed by Canadian talents Shelagh Armstrong-Hodgson and Paul Hodgson, the reverse depicts a couple traveling the path of life, with airy, flowing trees capturing the vitality of the golden years. The obverse showcases Dora de Pedery-Hunt’s classic effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
