This special coin series was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint from 1998–2009 to commemorate the Chinese lunar calendar. 1998 was the first issued coin of the Chinese lunar calendar and is the most sought-after. Each coin in the series displays images of all 12 lunar animals in a circular arrangement surrounding a central 24K gold-plated octagonal cameo. A different individual animal emblem is featured within the central cameo of each coin. The set comes displayed in an embossed red velvet presentation case.
