Description
This 1996 sterling silver dollar pays tribute to the bicentennial of John McIntosh’s arrival in Canada and the subsequent discovery of his namesake apple. The success of the McIntosh apple is a testament to the dedication of three generations of the McIntosh family; after John discovered the original tree in 1796, his sons and grandson successfully transitioned the fruit from a local staple to an international success.
The reverse design created by Canadian artist Roger Hill, features a McIntosh apple in front of an orchard, a symbol of the family's impact on the nation’s agricultural and horticultural development. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.
