Description
Canada Remembers
This 1994 coin set marked the 50th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Operation Overlord began on June 6, 1944, with the D-Day landings along the coast of Normandy, France. Launched between 6:30 and 7:30 AM, this historic assault was the largest amphibious operation ever staged, involving 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft. Over 150,000 Allied troops disembarked on the first day alone. Canadian and British forces successfully secured Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches to the east, while American troops landed at Utah and Omaha beaches. Within five days, 16 Allied divisions had landed, beginning the final drive to liberate Europe.
The locations marked on the map with Canadian flags and crosses indicate the military cemeteries where many of Canada's fallen servicemen are buried.
