King George VI ascended to the throne in December 1936 and had his coronation in May 1937. Originally named Albert Frederick Arthur George, he adopted the name George to signify a seamless transition from his father, George V, who passed away in January 1936.

The 22k gold coins minted during his rule were the sole ones issued: no additional Sovereigns or proof sets were released until his daughter, Elizabeth II, was crowned.
