Description
After the last silver dollars were struck for circulation in 1967, many collectors sought to continue the series with a new numismatic issue. Starting in 1971 and continuing to the present, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued its longest running and most popular series of collector coins, with a new cased proof collector silver dollar each year. Each coin features a unique commemorative design, and together they recount the history and important events of our nation.
The Hudson's Bay Company
This 1995 sterling silver dollar commemorates the 325th anniversary of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Long before becoming the iconic Canadian department store, the company’s rich history began in 1668, when Pierre-Esprit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers led a historic trading expedition from England to the New World via Hudson Bay.
The coin's reverse, designed by Canadian artist Vincent McIndoe, features the pioneering explorers, their ship the Nonsuch, and Charles Fort, their original trading post.
