Description

After the last silver dollars were struck for circulation in 1967, many collectors sought to continue the series with a new numismatic issue.  Starting in 1971 and continuing to the present, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued its longest running and most popular series of collector coins, with a new cased proof collector silver dollar each year.  Each coin features a unique commemorative design, and together they recount the history and important events of our nation.

The Last RCMP Dog Sled Patrol

This sterling silver dollar honors the 25th anniversary of the last RCMP dog team patrol, a massive 804.5 km round-trip journey between Old Crow, Yukon, and Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. Powered by 21 purebred Siberian Huskies, the patrol was commanded by Constable Warren Townsend and Special Constable Peter Benjamin. To capture this historic milestone,

Canadian artist Ian D. Sparkes designed the coin's reverse, showcasing an RCMP officer guiding the team through the northern wilderness.
