Description

Celebrate Canadian transit history with this commemorative sterling silver dollar marking the 175th anniversary of the January 1817 Kingston-to-York stagecoach service. This release is also the first sterling silver coin issued since London's Royal Mint struck the 1911 pattern dollar.

The Design

Designed by Vancouver artist Karsten Smith, the coin depicts a lone coachman steering four powerful horses through the winter snow; a nod to founder Samuel Purdy, who relied on a horse-drawn sleigh to maintain regular winter service.

Canada's Commemorative Silver Dollars

After the last silver dollars were struck for circulation in 1967, many collectors sought to continue the series with a new numismatic issue.  Starting in 1971 and continuing to the present, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued its longest running and most popular series of collector coins, with a new cased proof collector silver dollar each year.  Each coin features a unique commemorative design, and together they recount the history and important events of our nation.
