Echoing the National War Memorial in spirit, the boughs and stone motif reflect the enduring ideals of peace and freedom for which so many gave their lives. This tribute to “PAX ET LIBERTAS” (“Peace and Freedom”) debuts 100 years after the model submitted by British sculptor Vernon March was selected as the winning design concept for Canada’s commemorative monument. The Design:
Smaller yet more finely detailed than its fine silver counterpart, this gold coin features the side-by-side allegories of Peace and Freedom— the two inseparable ideals that crown the arch of Canada’s National War Memorial—accented with a delicate bough of poppies, laurel and maple leaves. Each line is meticulously engraved, giving this piece a portrait-like intimacy.
