Description

Released in 1993, this $20 sterling silver coin is the eighth release in Canada's acclaimed ten-coin series, Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Celebrate Canada's aviation heroes and their groundbreaking achievements.

This piece honors the Lockheed 14 Super Electra and Zebulon Lewis Leigh, Canada's first instrument-rated airline pilot and the first pilot to work for Trans Canada Airlines.

The Design

The reverse features the Lockheed 14 Super Electra along with a 24-karat gold plated cameo portrait of Zebulon Lewis Leigh. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery-Hunt.

Lockheed 14 Super Electra

Developed for passenger and cargo service, the Lockheed 14 Super Electra traded the larger capacity of its competitor, the Douglas DC-3, for superior cruise performance. Specialized Fowler flaps and leading-edge slots were engineered into the design to improve take-off and landing capabilities. The aircraft first flew in July 1937, later evolving into the wartime Hudson and Ventura bomber series.
