Coin rolls are groups of coins packaged together, usually in a paper wrapper. The number of coins in a roll depends on the denomination. For example, a standard roll contains 25 quarters, 25 dimes, 40 nickels, or 50 pennies (when pennies were still being produced for circulation). Today, rolls can contain regular circulation coins as well as commemorative and collector issues.
Why Collect Coin Rolls?
Collecting rolls gives you another way to enjoy Canadian coins. Instead of having one example of a coin, you have an entire roll of them, and the packaging can be just as interesting as the coins inside. Specially packaged rolls can mark a specific year, anniversary, or theme, making them a small snapshot of Canadian coinage at a particular point in time.
For some collectors, part of the appeal is simply having a complete roll of a particular coin. For others, rolls offer the chance to search through multiple examples of the same issue for interesting dates, varieties, errors, or coins in particularly nice condition.
