Description

Join the fascinating travels of Marco Polo with this 2024 five-ounce fine silver coin that celebrates exploration and discovery. The coin features exceptional art, leading-edge minting innovation using engraved mother of pearl, and an extremely low mintage of just 750 pieces. It is issued by Solomon Islands and has a $25 face value.

The intricate design engraved in a rich red coloured mother of pearl presents an image of Marco Polo in front of a ship and a map of China. He is holding the book that he has written about his travels. The obverse is one of the last to feature the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, together with the inscriptions: "Solomon Islands," "2024," "5 oz Ag 999" and "Elizabeth II."

Marco Polo
Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant who lived from 1254 to 1324. He was an explorer and writer who most famously travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. His travels are recorded in The Travels of Marco Polo (also known as Book of the Marvels of the World and Il Milione, c. 1300), a book that described the then-mysterious culture and inner workings of the Eastern world, including the wealth and great size of the Mongol Empire and China under the Yuan dynasty. Marco Polo's experience and writings provided Europeans with their first comprehensive look into Chinese, Persian, Indian, Japanese and other Asian societies.
