Description
Located nine kilometers north of Albert in France's Somme region, an imposing bronze caribou (the emblem of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment) stands atop the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial with its head raised in defiance. At the base of the monument three bronze tablets commemorate the members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the Royal Naval Reserve, and the Mercantile Marine who fell with no known graves. A nearby plaque bears a poignant tribute by poet John Oxenham to those who sacrificed their lives.
This $30 sterling silver coin serves as the second release in the RCM's National War Memorials series. The reverse design features the memorial's caribou statue framed by excerpts from John Oxenham’s memorial poem presented in both English and French.
