The Monarch's striking orange wings detailed with bold black veins and white-spotted borders serve as a clever natural warning system rather than an easy target. By feeding exclusively on milkweed, Monarch caterpillars absorb distasteful toxins that deter avian predators. This defense is so effective that the edible Viceroy butterfly evolved to mimic the Monarch's appearance. Beyond its defensive adaptations, the Monarch boasts the longest migration of any insect, traveling up to 4,000 km (2,489 mi) every autumn from southern Canada to central Mexico to escape the winter cold.
