Description

Between 2000 and 2003 the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated Canada's 20th-century transport innovations with the Land, Sea, and Rail Transportation Coin Series. Each year featured one coin each for Land (car), Sea (ship), and Rail (train).

The sixth coin in the series honors the Scotia locomotive. This $20 special-edition sterling silver coin is designed with a holographic cameo.

The Scotia

Built in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1861, the Scotia was the first locomotive in Canada constructed with a steel boiler. This innovative design reduced heat loss, allowing the engine to generate significantly more power.
