Description

Between 2000 and 2003 the Royal Canadian Mint celebrated Canada's 20th-century transport innovations with the Land, Sea, and Rail Transportation Coin Series. Each year featured one coin each for Land (car), Sea (ship), and Rail (train).

The twelfth coin in the series honors the FA-1 Diesel Electric Locomotive. This special-edition $20 coin pairs intricately detailed sterling silver with selective gold plating.

FA-1 Diesel Electric Locomotive

Mid-20th-century steam locomotives routinely struggled against the rugged terrain between Montreal and Chicoutimi while hauling heavy freight loads of paper and bauxite. Seeking a powerful solution, engineers embraced a cutting-edge diesel engine designed for superior strength and efficiency. The introduction of the Canadian National FA-1 diesel-electric locomotive solved the haulage bottleneck and sparked a new era for Canada's rail networks.
