This 2016 $20 fine silver coin features a classic Canadian icon, the caribou with its offspring.  Mintage is limited to just 5,500 coins. The coin is struck in .9999 fine silver and weighs just over one ounce.  HST/GST exempt.

The Design:

Highly detailed selective colouring showcases the baby caribou next to its mother.  The fine engraving enhances the calf’s tan and white fur, as well as the darker colours of its eyes, nose, and hooves.  On the ground there is a burst of marvelous colours of purple, green and yellow, as the Tundra provides a meal for the calf and its mother.  Mother and calf will need the food to sustain them on their trek across the Tundra. The reverse of the coin is engraved with the word “Canada”, the face value “20 Dollars”, and the year “2016”.

The Caribou

The caribou range in size, with males weighing between 125–275 kg, females 90 kg–139 kg and new-born calves 5–9 kg. The adult caribou can reach speeds of 60-80 km/h.  Both male and female caribou have antlers, a unique difference in the deer family. Adult males have tall antlers with flat, hand-like projections, while females have smaller versions. Their coat colour can vary from almost white to a dark brown.
