Philp, decided to form a seven-plane airshow team to carry on the legacy of the Golden Centennaires which he had commanded in 1967 during Canada’s Centennial Year. Initially flown by instructors at 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School, the team expanded to nine aircraft in 1972 and soon competitive tryouts were held for pilot volunteers from across Canada, such was the popularity of the new team. The Snowbirds were granted permanent status as a new squadron in the Canadian Forces on April 1, 1978 when they officially became known as 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron.

Snowbirds pilots are all volunteers, as are the majority of the squadron’s technicians and support staff. His drive and determination to succeed exemplify some of the qualities that define history’s great explorers, while the chronicle of his journeys to Canada’s Arctic and Pacific coasts would inspire others to follow. Painstakingly engraved in meticulous detail, the scene captures Mackenzie’s expedition at the westernmost point of their transcontinental voyage, in a breathtaking inlet surrounded by rocky peaks. Here, the waters of the Pacific in the background seem to sparkle with a golden gleam, thanks to the coin’s surface and the polished finish. In the foreground, Mackenzie stands at the water’s edge where he has inscribed the words “Alex Mackenzie from Canada by land 22nd July 1793” on a large rock, as evidence of the explorer’s passage and his epic journey. Instrumental to the success of this expedition is a Nuxalk guide, who is pictured at bottom left with his back turned to the viewer; to the right of Mackenzie stands a member of his expedition, while another helps to carry the dugout canoe loaned by the Nuxalk over the shallow water. The entirety of the reverse boasts a high degree of historical accuracy—particularly in its depiction of the clothing worn by the voyageurs and the traditional cedar hat of the Nuxalk; the coin truly shines as an artistic piece, and an everlasting snapshot of a historic moment in Canadian history.

The coin features an outstanding amount of finely detailed engraving, with great care taken to ensure the historical accuracy of this depiction of a pinnacle point in Alexander Mackenzie’s transcontinental journey to the Pacific. This was the second European expedition to the area, as Spanish explorer Jose Maria Narvaez was the first to enter the Strait of Georgia only a year earlier. On this expedition, enough data was generated to create the first detailed chart of the area, which was published in 1798. The city of Vancouver was named after the captain in 1886. His complete survey of the West Coast, from California to Alaska, conducted over the summers between 1792 and 1794, is often regarded as one of the greatest feats of maritime exploratory history.
